- ETERNITY
-
- ARE YOU READY?
-
- WHETHER YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A RELIGIOUS PERSON OR NOT, THERE IS ONE EVENT IN
- WHICH ALL HUMANS SHARE A COMMON BOND; SOMEDAY EACH OF US WILL LEAVE THIS EARTHLY
- LIFE AND PASS INTO ETERNITY!
-
- This message was prepared because we believe that the Bible is a supernatural
- document from our Creator to whom we are ultimately accountable.
-
- If you would dismiss this as religious nonsense, please ask yourself this one
- question:
-
- "Am I absolutely sure that I understand what the Bible says about how
- a person can know for certain that they will spend eternity with God?"
-
- If you understand the Bible's message (about who Jesus Christ is and what he did
- for you) and reject that message; that is your right. But it would be a great
- tragedy to reject that message without first understanding it.
-
- The Bible says that each of us will spend eternity either in Heaven or Hell.
- The choice is ours and depends upon our response to God's message of Good News
- which can be summarized as follows:
-
- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
- | |
- | God loves us and desires that we spend eternity with him. |
- | |
- | Each person falls short of God's standard of perfection. The Bible calls |
- | this sin. The consequence of sin is spiritual death and eternal |
- | separation from God. |
- | |
- | God provided the remedy for the sin problem by entering the world as Jesus |
- | Christ and personally paying the penalty of sin for each one of us by |
- | dying in our place. |
- | |
- | God offers eternal life as a gift which is received by repentance (turning |
- | from sin) and faith (trusting) in Jesus Christ. |
- | |
- | Ultimately, every person must either accept Jesus as his or her personal |
- | Savior or else reject him. To reject Jesus is to reject God and his plan |
- | that we spend eternity with him. |
- | |
- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
-
- God loves us and it is his purpose that we spend eternity with him. The Bible
- says, FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, THAT
- WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH, BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE (1). Jesus
- said, FOR I GO TO PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU, AND IF I GO AND PREPARE A PLACE FOR
- YOU, I WILL COME AGAIN, AND RECEIVE YOU TO MYSELF; THAT WHERE I AM, THERE YOU
- MAY BE ALSO (2). But there is a problem.
-
- Each of us is afflicted with a serious problem called sin. When the Bible tells
- us that we are sinners it refers to the fact that we fall far short of God's
- standard of absolute perfection. The Bible puts it this way, THERE IS NONE
- RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE, FOR ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD
- (3). The consequence of an imperfect sinner facing a holy God is put this way,
- FOR THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH (4). God is so serious about the sin problem that
- spiritual death and separation from God are its end result. Contrary to what
- many think, we cannot save ourselves from God's judgment against sin by trying
- to live a good life or by performing religious deeds. Scripture tells us that
- we receive eternal life NOT AS A RESULT OF WORKS, THAT NO ONE SHOULD BOAST (5).
- But because God loves us, he has provided a remedy for the sin problem. The
- Bible says, ALL OF US LIKE SHEEP HAVE GONE ASTRAY, EACH OF US HAS TURNED TO HIS
- OWN WAY; BUT THE LORD HAS CAUSED THE SINS OF US ALL TO FALL ON HIM (6).
-
- God's remedy for the sin problem was to enter the world in the person of Jesus
- Christ and to pay sin's penalty for each of us by dying in our place. The Bible
- emphasizes that Jesus is God and became man. Referring to Jesus as the Word it
- says, IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD, AND THE WORD WAS WITH GOD, AND THE WORD WAS
- GOD, AND THE WORD BECAME FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US (7). Jesus' purpose in coming
- to the world was to pay sin's penalty of death and face God's wrath against sin
- for each of us. The Bible says that GOD DEMONSTRATES HIS OWN LOVE FOR US IN
- THAT WHILE WE WERE YET SINNERS, CHRIST DIED FOR US (8). Demonstrating that he
- was God as he claimed to be and that he had indeed triumphed over sin's penalty
- of death, Jesus was raised from the dead. The Bible says that CHRIST DIED FOR
- OUR SINS ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES, AND THAT HE WAS BURIED, AND THAT HE WAS
- RAISED ON THE THIRD DAY (9). But the only way Jesus can affect our lives is for
- us to receive him. BUT AS MANY AS RECEIVED (trusted in) HIM, TO THEM HE GAVE
- THE RIGHT TO BECOME CHILDREN OF GOD, TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN HIS NAME (10).
-
- The Good News is that God offers us forgiveness of sin and eternal life as a
- gift that we receive through repentance and faith. The Bible states that God is
- NOT WISHING FOR ANY TO PERISH BUT FOR ALL TO COME TO REPENTANCE (11).
- Repentance involves a confession to God of our sinfulness and guilt, and an
- attitude of mind that desires to turn away from our sins and turn to Jesus in
- faith. Faith is the key that unlocks the gift. Scripture says, FOR BY GRACE
- YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED THROUGH FAITH (12). Since faith is the key, it is important
- to understand what is meant by saving faith. This faith is not an intellectual
- acceptance of the facts about Jesus. For instance, we may believe that Jesus
- was God in the flesh, that he died to pay the penalty of sin in our place, and
- that he rose from the dead. But merely accepting these facts as truth does not
- unlock the gift. In order to unlock the gift we must transfer our trust from
- whatever we have been counting on to make us pleasing to God (e.g., good works,
- church membership, or anything else), and place our trust in Jesus. Jesus said,
- I STAND AT THE DOOR (of your heart) AND KNOCK; IF ANYONE HEARS MY VOICE AND
- OPENS THE DOOR, I WILL COME IN TO HIM (13). The gift is received when we turn
- from our sin in repentance and turn to Jesus with a saving faith that trusts in
- him alone for eternal life.
-
- The Bible presents each of us with a choice. We can either trust Jesus for
- eternal life or we can reject God's plan and trust in something else. We must
- consider the consequences of rejection. The Bible says, HE WHO BELIEVES IN THE
- SON HAS ETERNAL LIFE; BUT HE WHO DOES NOT BELIEVE THE SON SHALL NOT SEE LIFE,
- BUT THE WRATH OF GOD ABIDES ON HIM (14). FOR IF WE GO ON SINNING WILLFULLY
- AFTER RECEIVING THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH, THERE NO LONGER REMAINS A SACRIFICE
- FOR SINS, BUT A CERTAIN TERRIFYING EXPECTATION OF JUDGMENT (15).
-
- If you have never accepted God's offer of eternal life, God requires that you
- come to Jesus just as you are but with an attitude of heart which says:
-
- "Lord Jesus, I know I have sinned against you and am separated from you
- by my sin. For this I ask forgiveness. I believe you died for me, and
- in doing so paid the penalty for my sin. I am willing to turn from my
- sin and ask you by faith to come into my life as my personal Savior.
- Help me to follow and obey you as the Lord of my life and to find your
- perfect will for my life. Thank you for dying for me and giving me the
- gift of eternal life."
-
- C. S. Lewis was a skeptic of Christianity until his conversion to faith in
- Jesus. In "Mere Christianity" he makes this statement:
-
- "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would
- not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic -- on a
- level with the man who says he is a poached egg -- or else he would be
- the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and
- is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut
- Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you
- can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come
- with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He
- has not left that open to us. He did not intend to."
-
- Jesus promises eternal life to all who turn to him in faith. The choice is up
- to you. Please do not reject him without careful consideration. If you have
- any questions please call 1-800-333-0601 (WCDR-FM, a Christian radio station
